5 Important Rules in Website Design

When it comes to your website design, some additional attention should be paid to every minute detail to make sure it performs optimally to serve its purpose. Here are some important rules you should take into account to be sure your website performs well.

1) Do not use splash pages

Splash pages are the first pages you see when you arrive at a site. They normally have a very beautiful image with words like "click here to enter" or "welcome". In fact, they are just that -- pretty vases that have no real purpose. Don`t let your visitors have a reason to leave your site quickly after visiting. Give them the value of your site without the splash page.

2) Do not use excessive banner advertisements

Most people have trained themselves to ignore banner advertisements so this way you can only waste valuable website real estate. Instead of that, provide to your visitors more valueable content and put some relevant affiliate links into your site content, and let your visitors feel that they want to buy instead of being pushed to buy your site`s products or services.

3) Have a clear and simple navigation

You have to provide very straightforward and a simple navigation menu so that even a young child will know how to use that. Avoid using complicated Flash-based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. If your visitors do not know how to navigate, they will leave your web site.

4) Have a clear indication of where the user is

When visitors are deeply engrossed in browsing your website, you`ll want to make sure they know on which part of your site they are in at that moment. That way, they will be able to browse and find relevant information or navigate to any part of the site easily. Don't confuse your visitors because confusion only can mean "leaving your site"!

5) Avoid to use audio on your web site

If your visitor wants to stay a long time at your web site, reading your content, you will want to make sure they're not annoyed by some .mp3 or .wav audio file looping on on your web site. If you however insist on adding audio files, make sure they have some control over it -- mute or volume controls would be nice.
